We’re thankful in spite of

The holiday season is upon us once again and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. During this time of year, it’s important for an individual to reflect on what he or she is grateful for.

Columbia students are not immune from this simple holiday tradition. This year we have much to be thankful for.

We should be thankful that our presidential mansion cost nearly $4 million to completely remodel in addition to the $1.5 million the college plunged into the project to buy the property initially. Although a presidential mansion is a common facet among most colleges and universities around the country, having an official residence for Columbia’s president was an extremely pressing matter. So we are glad the college was able to finish this most important and needed campus addition, amid a recession, tuition increase and college-wide departmental budget cuts no less. Well-done Columbia.

Cussing could cost you

In the five to seven minutes it takes to smoke a cigarette in front of any one of Columbia’s buildings, one may overhear dozens upon dozens of expletives enunciated. And though said smoker, or any other passerby, may or may not be offended, the city of Chicago is convinced it should be.
